Britain summons North Korean ambassador to protest missile launch

Britain said on Thursday it had summoned North Korea’s ambassador to the Foreign Ministry to denounce his country’s launch of a ballistic missile over Japan’s Hokkaido island this week.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Teresa Mei and her Japanese counterpart agreed to work together to counter the threat posed by North Korea during May’s visit to Japan.

“The North Korean ambassador was summoned to the State Department today and I explained to him that the UK strongly condemns the launch of the system for a medium-range missile over Japan,” Mark Field, the British Secretary of State for Asia and the Pacific, said in a statement.

“The reckless behavior of North Korea violates several UN Security Council resolutions and threatens international security,” he said. “I call on the regime to stop this illegal endeavor to develop nuclear and ballistic missiles and return to dialogue with the international community.”
