Oldest man in the world dies in Haifa

Yisrael Kristal، a Holocaust survivor who was recognized as the oldest man in the world by the Guinness World Records، died on Friday at the age of 113، reports Haaretz.

Kristal would have celebrated his 114th birthday on September 15.

Kristal، who lived in Haifa in northern Israel، was born in on September 15، 1903، in the Polish village of Zarnow. In 1920، at the age of 17، he moved to Lodz، where he later started a family and opened a candy factory.

He was deported to Auschwitz in 1940 and lost his first wife and two children in the Holocaust.

Kristal immigrated to Israel in 1950 with his second wife، and settled in Haifa، where he continued to manufacture candy.

Last year، he celebrated his bar mitzvah a century late، after missing it at the age of 13 due to World War I.

Kristal rarely spoke about his experience in the Holocaust، telling Haaretz several years ago، “The events of one day in Auschwitz could fill two books.”

He is survived by two children، multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Kristal’s funeral will take place on Saturday evening at 10:30 p.m. in the Haifa cemetery.
