One person was killed and two others injured when shots were fired at Great Lakes Dragaway Sunday, Kenosha County Sheriff’s officials said.
Around 7 p.m. the sheriff’s department received a call that three people had been shot during Larry’s Fun Fest at the motor speedway near Union Grove. Another 911 caller reported someone had been killed.
Kenosha County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Malecki said at least two people were conveyed to a local hospital.
Sheriff David Beth confirmed that one person was shot to death. The sheriff also said that gang members from Milwaukee and Chicago may have been involved in the shooting.
Organizers of Larry’s Fun Fest were expecting around 5,000 people from southeastern Wisconsin and norther Illinois to attend the event which features “smaller souped-up, kind of ‘Fast and Furious’ type vehicles,” Malecki said in an 8:30 p.m. phone interview.
Law enforcement officers and paramedics were sent to the scene. The west frontage road leading to Great Lakes Dragaway on Highway KR between Interstate-94 and Highway 45 was shut down by officers.
“We’re investigating how active the scene is, whether the suspect or suspects are still on scene or if they cleared the scene prior to law enforcement arriving,” said Malecki. “We’re treating this as a very serious situation.
Malecki said authorities are trying to figure out what precipitated the shootings and who was involved. He said it was too early to provide a description of the shooter or shooters.
Many of the spectators at Larry’s Fun Fest left soon after the shooting, which was originally reported by 911 callers as three people being shot point blank.
“I’m thinking this was a mass exodus though I can’t say for sure. It didn’t take us to get everybody to leave,” said Malecki, adding that the evacuation is making it difficult for authorities to establish a crime scene.
Great Lakes Dragaway is a quarter-mile drag strip that opened in 1955 in the Kenosha County Town of Paris. Larry’s Fun Fest was billed as part-car show and part-drag race.
