The Myanmar International Red Cross welcomes stop by the Rohingya militants of the cease-fire

In Myanmar, the International Red Cross welcomed the announcement of the unilateral ceasefire by the militants of the Rohingya Muslim minority, describing it as a major positive development.

The BBC reported on Sunday that the Burmese army had not yet responded to the Rohingya armed men’s call for a ceasefire to end the violence.

The Rohingya Rescue Army, Arakan (ARSA), has declared a unilateral ceasefire for a month starting today to enable aid organizations to help ease the humanitarian crisis in northwestern Myanmar, prompting the Burmese army to lay down arms as well.

About 290,000 Rohingyis fled to neighboring Bangladesh because of the violence in the country since Aug. 25, causing a humanitarian crisis
