Tory Brexit rebel Dominic Grieve said support would embolden his party’s Europhiles when the bill returned to the Commons in the summer.

He warned his Tory colleagues that the move would scupper Theresa May’s Brexit negotiations and cause economic damage by preventing the UK from striking lucrative trade deals with the likes of the US and Australia.

But ex-Trade minister Lord Price said it would “place significant constraints on us economically”.
