TORY rebels could force Britain to stay in an EU customs union if peers rip up the Governmentâs Brexit plans on Wednesday, says a leading Conservative MP.
The House of Lords is voting on a Jeremy Corbyn amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill â and Labour are confident of winning the backing of several Conservatives.
Tory Brexit rebel Dominic Grieve said support would embolden his partyâs Europhiles when the bill returned to the Commons in the summer.
He warned his Tory colleagues that the move would scupper Theresa Mayâs Brexit negotiations and cause economic damage by preventing the UK from striking lucrative trade deals with the likes of the US and Australia.
But ex-Trade minister Lord Price said it would âplace significant constraints on us economicallyâ.
